ISO 45001:2018 is the new international standard that outlines the requirements for the development of an Occupational Health & Safety Management System. The new ISO 45001:2018 has replaced the OHSAS 18001/ELOT 1801 standard, and provides a global reference framework for the prevention of accidents and the continuous improvement of working conditions through the adoption of effective protective measures. It is addressed to all types of companies, businesses and organizations regardless of their size and activity. Any company can develop an Occupational Health & Safety Management System with the aim of ensuring the health and safety of its employees and all stakeholders, such as customers and suppliers, adopting a reliable system for identifying, recording and assessing risks, setting specific health and safety objectives and implementing planned actions to reduce and/or eliminate risks related to the organization’s activities. – The content of the standard The ISO 45001 standard follows the High-Level Structure (HLS) with the aim of developing a comprehensive functional management system. The standard also complies with other standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. Moreover, a new aspect of the standard is the inclusion of all individuals working in the wider context of the organization, such as employees, suppliers, external partners, etc. The issues that are mainly addressed in this standard are the integration of employees into the management system, i.e. their involvement in the organization’s Health & Safety issues, the improvement of the company's organization in relation to what is required by the standard, the responsibility of top management in implementing the standard, the identification and analysis of the causes leading to working accidents, the response measures that are observed and compliance with the legislation in force.
